How to survive a long haul flight?

Are you planning to travel somewhere halfway around the world for an exciting vacation or for your business meeting or maybe for studying abroad? You are checking the flights, but all the flights are more than 10hrs long. Initially, you are excited as it’s your first time on a long-haul flight and you have little or maybe no information about the reality. Usually, long-haul flights take off with excitement but end up being fed up, bored, uncomfortable, etc mid-flight. So let’s have a look at how you can avoid this and survive a long-haul flight.

Aircraft and airline matters

You are on the search flights page and you see multiple options with a similar fare for the same destination and now you are confused about which one to choose. It’s always better to choose a wide-body aircraft as it would be comfortable in terms of legroom, larger overhead bin space, and more spacious. Advanced jets like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus A350 can give a passenger a very comfortable and smooth ride. Choose an airline that gives the best passenger service and experience.

Non-stop or Multiple stops

Many flights you will see have multiple stops in between while others go non-stop. Choosing the appropriate flight depends on person to person. Some would prefer non-stop so they can sleep well while some prefer multiple stops as they get breaks while flying. When booking multiple stop flights, make sure to check the layover time between flights, and some flights might also require you to change terminals.

Seat selection

Many airlines offer free seat selection while some offer for a fee. If you opt to let the airline allot you a seat, you might end up in the middle row of a 2-4-2 configured aircraft and this might not be the best option if you are flying alone. With the complimentary seat selection, book a seat of your choice, use third-party sites like SeatGuru to find out the best seat. It’s also not a bad idea to book the choice of seat you prefer by paying an appropriate fee. If selecting a window seat on a day flight, do some research and select the one opposite to the sun to have wonderful views and not get irritated due to sunlight as it is bright at a higher altitude.

Meals

Airlines do offer tasty and delicious meals and snacks once or a couple of times during the flight. You can also bring your snacks on board to have in between. Make sure to keep yourself well hydrated and avoid sitting empty stomach. I like to stock the snacks they give during meals and eat whenever I feel.

Carry essentials

A travel kit in handy would be a good decision, Usually, airlines do provide a small amenity kit, but it would be better to carry your own. Also keep with you some loose clothes as you might feel a need to change mid-flight, as jeans or any other formal clothes might make you feel uncomfortable, which would result in poor sleep. Also keep a sweater or pullover in your cabin bag, just in case you start feeling cold. The blankets provided are not thick enough. Airplane cabins can be noisy and disturbing for a sound sleep due to IFE screens playing on, or the sunlight might bother you. The best thing is to carry an eye mask as well as headphones to isolate yourself from the disturbing background.

Entertainment

Surviving on a 16hr flight without any form of entertainment is someone’s worst nightmare. Airlines do offer a wide selection of movies, shows, games on the In-flight entertainment screens, but the options are limited. It’s always a good idea to carry your own entertainment stuff. You can also complete your pending work or even read a book, or even film a beautiful timelapse. Have a walk around the cabin as sitting in one place might be boring and help in easing blood flow, as chances of blood clotting increase due to constantly sitting in one position.

Explore

If you have booked a window seat, you can explore the beautiful views. You can also witness how the weather changes from one place to another, view some beautiful mountain ranges, cities, rivers and much more. You can even witness some wonderful skies during dusk or dawn. Another wonderful view would be to look out at the night skies to spot the dark sky full of stars, and if lucky a bright milky way. The cabin light might not give you the best view but the crew usually dim the lights or even switch off the lights. If you are not seated in a window seat, walk to a crew member and they might allow you to see through the door window.

Long-haul flights can be super fun as well as tiring. You get to see some beautiful views along the way, enjoy some tasty snacks, and can also get a good sleep on board. Many airlines even have mood lighting in the cabin making the flight more relaxed and refreshing. You can even bid for a business class or a first class upgrade during check-in to make your flight even more smooth and comfortable. Flying on a long-haul flight is an experience one must have once in a lifetime.
